Chapter 5 · Weight, friction, pressure
Gravity never switches offso why does she stop speeding up?
Balanced forcesair resistance = weight
Earthg = 9.8 m s⁻²
Marssmaller g
Friction opposes motion
Attempted motionfriction = push, no movement
Accelerates downwardStage 1 · large resultant force
Acceleration decreasesStage 2 · smaller resultant force
Terminal velocityStage 3 · resultant force zero
DecelerationStage 4 · parachute open
New terminal velocityStage 5 · slower, safe to land
In a vacuumno terminal velocity
Small pressureforce spread out
Big pressuresmall area
No padbig pressure
Knee padless pressure
Smooth soleless pressure
Ridged solemore pressure

Chapter 5 recap

  • Mass is the amount of matter (kg) and never changes. Weight is a force (N): Fw = mg, g = 9.8 m s⁻² on Earth (smaller g on Mars → less weight).
  • Friction opposes motion or attempted motion. In free fall, weight stays the same while air resistance grows with speed until they balance: terminal velocity (none in a vacuum).
  • Pressure = force over area: P = F/A in Pa (N m⁻²). Smaller area → bigger pressure. Two shoes → total area = 2 × one shoe.
