Chapter 1 recap

  • Prebiotic Earth: reducing atmosphere (NH₃, H₂, very little O₂), much warmer, intense UV (no ozone layer), volcanic gases (H₂O, CO₂), constant asteroid bombardment.
  • Oparin–Haldane: simple organic molecules → polymers → a self-replicating polymer → a cell. Miller–Urey: gases + sparks made amino acids, evidence for step 1.
  • Cells: a cell is the smallest unit of life; all cells come from pre-existing cells. Life processes: MRS GREN. Prokaryotes lack a nucleus; eukaryotes have one.
  • Next: Chapter 2 · Bacteria and how they live

How did life begin, and what makes something alive?
