Chapter 4 recap

  • Particle theory: solids (close, regular, vibrate), liquids (close, irregular, slide past), gases (far apart, fast, random). Use SHE MASSIVE to describe state changes.
  • During a state change, heat increases potential energy to weaken and break intermolecular bonds, not kinetic energy, so the temperature stays constant.
  • Heating curves go flat at melting and boiling (latent heat). Evaporation: any temperature, surface only. Boiling: at the boiling point, throughout the liquid.
  • Next: Chapter 5 · Heat calculations

Why does boiling water stay at 100°C however long you heat it?
