Chapter 6 · Precipitation reactions
Clear + clear = cloudy?where did the solid come from?
Silver chloride, AgCl(s)Ag⁺ and Cl⁻ attract each other more than water
Test-tube labnine solutions made from resource-sheet ions

Chapter 6 recap

  • Precipitation reaction: two soluble substances react to form an insoluble solid, the precipitate (an insoluble ionic solid).
  • A precipitate forms when its ions are more attracted to each other than to water. Ions more attracted to water stay dissolved.
  • Swap partners, check the solubility rules, write a balanced equation with (s) and (aq). Ions left in solution are spectator ions.
  • Next: Chapter 7 · Displacement reactions
